   Résumé
   La vie de Kitty Darling, «Queen of Hearts», vedette du music-hall populaire: ses débuts triomphaux et dérisoires de strip-teaseuse, la condamnation à mort de son mari, la naissance prématurée de sa fille April qui est confiée à des religieuses. Les années passent. April est obligée de monter sur scène pour assurer le soutien de sa «famille». Le succès est immédiat, mais Kitty, repentante, s'empoisonne pour laisser April vivre sa vie.
   Commentaire
   Le premier grand film parlant, parce qu'il refuse le diktat des dialogues. Le premier vrai film musical, parce qu'il dédaigne les intermèdes musicaux. De somptueux mouvements de caméra, des morceaux et des ballets parfaitement intégrés à la narration permettent à Mamoulian de résoudre avec brio l'apparente contradiction. Applause annonce vingt ans à l'avance les sommets de la comédie musicale à son âge classique (Donen/Minnelli).
